Happy Father’s Day
My father is a musician. He used to play at the apple orchards in Massachusetts in autumn, and we'd get to drink cider and eat apple fritters and pet pot bellied pigs and and baby goats while he played acoustic bluegrass and folk music with his best friends in Old Cold Tater, a band that was formed somewhere around the time of my birth consisting of a mail courier, a Harvard drop out, his girlfriend and my father the stone mason. He'd play my grandfather's church often too, and somewhere around middle school his music seemed pretty corny to me with it's folksy lyrics and banjo and stuff, not to mention the venue so often was our family church. It definitely didn't feel cool when I was trying to be a cool skateboard kid listening to Public Enemy and Peter Tosh.
I often attempted to avoid getting dragged to his concerts (except for some legendary bluegrass festivals which somehow were crazy fun). My denial of my guitar playing father in middle school somehow took a hard turn when in high school I discovered the Grateful Dead and realized that my father's band played not only Friend of The Devil, but Cold Rain and Snow and some other ripping Dead tunes. Right around that time Old Cold Tater started playing a nearby pub every Wednesday, The Red Barrel, and people started showing up from all over the place to see them play. The 'Tater's would tear it up with a few long sets and many an encore to adoring fans including almost all of my friends far and near. My father was a legend again. The pride I had watching my father dig into some enormous really soulful guitar solo was immense. He still tears it up and there is no place I'd rather be than sitting on the porch while he noodles and flat picks old Leadbelly songs as the ash on his cigarette burns clear to the filter hanging off his lip and somehow clings on. You know it's a good song when he's so focused that he doesn't even pull a drag of his smoke, and just lets it burn like incense down to the nib.
Here's to all you father's out there, making dad jokes, embarrassing us and loving us and being there for the family.

This song reminds me of all of the gorgeous music that my father and his friends introduced me to over the years. This is an Austin band that left a huge mark on the Texas music scene.
