Thanks to everyone who came out to our Open Air Art Studio on Sunday. Michael Franklin and a team of volunteer Naropa University Art Therapy Grad students created a really special day for the community to get involved with clay. We started by forming and connecting individual logs of clay into an enormous interconnected ring that spanned our large rectangular tables. Then we got to work with the clay right in front of us and explore anything that felt right with the clay using our hands and some simple tools to sculpt and squish and smooth it. There were dragons and serpents, towers and cairns, braids and birds. The experience of creating with no rules or expectations was a release. During the first session we had a chance to start over and smoosh our clay back into a log and begin a second time. The impermanence and ability to just start over had a good feeling about it. Being connected to each other and joining creations also resonated in a meaningful way. The American poet and potter MC Richards came up with this concept and shared it with Michael and many through the years. She shares some of her beliefs and concepts in her book Centering: in Pottery, Poetry and the Person
