The Circus Comes to Jamestown

We wanted to share an amazing community event happening just up the hill in Jamestown this Sunday.

Sometimes your biggest dreams come true!

BREAD AND PUPPET is coming to JAMESTOWN, Colorado this Sunday October 9th from 3- 5 PM!!!

For anyone who has spent time in Vermont and had the opportunity to attend this amazing annual summertime circus like I did, you know just how magical it is. As a child of hippie parents, I spent more than a few summer days wandering around the  hills of Glover, Vermont at Bread & Puppet among the giant puppets and poetry and first tasted sourdough rye bread made by Peter Schumann, the founder and baker. This now traveling circus will be stopping in Colorado for a performance this weekend.

The Apocalypse Defiance Circus addresses the heart of the current moment with a bright barrage of acts spanning many moods, from slapstick to the sublime, all powered by a riotous brass band, stilt-dancers, blue horses, paper maché clouds and tigers. Building on the tradition of the Circus as popular spectacle, encompassing the ecstasy, sadness and absurdity of the world.

After the show, Bread and Puppet will serve its famous sourdough rye bread with aioli, and Bread and Puppet’s “Cheap Art” – books, posters, postcards, pamphlets and banners from the Bread and Puppet Press – will be for sale.

$10-$25 Suggested Donation- No One turned away for lack of funds!

The Bread and Puppet Theater was founded in 1963 by Peter Schumann on New York City’s Lower East Side. Besides rod-puppet and hand puppet shows for children, the concerns of the first productions were rents, rats, police, and other problems of the neighborhood. More complex theater pieces followed, in which sculpture, music, dance and language were equal partners. The puppets grew bigger and bigger. Annual presentations for Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and Memorial Day often included children and adults from the community as participants. Many performances were done in the street. During the Vietnam War, Bread and puppet staged block-long processions and pageants involving hundreds of people.

In 1974 Bread and Puppet moved to a farm in Glover in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont. The 140-year old hay barn was transformed into a museum for veteran puppets. Our Domestic Resurrection Circus, a two day outdoor festival of puppetry shows, was presented annually through 1998.

We've got to hear some Loretta Lynn today. What a powerful role model and county music icon.
