Bela Banjo Boss
Can we take a moment to give it up for Bela Fleck for winning another Grammy last night? We had the honor of serving Bela coffee this summer (he is an espresso geek) and catering some of the rehearsals for this new band. Scotty our manager at the Lyons shop managed to take care of all of the special order requests from Bela and do the deliveries himself (while he sat around listening to them practice and totally geeking out himself). What a selfless act on Scotty's behalf, right? And Billy Strings? What the heck? His hair is getting better all the time, he sort of has that rock star look that Emmy over at Sage Studio in Boulder seems to create. If I had that much hair I'd be doing the same thing. Bela's wife Abigail Washburn is an heirloom wheat geek, so we'll be sending them a coffee&wheat care package down to Nashville today. Stop by Lyons Moxie if you want to sign a card for him.
When I was making my way back to Boulder in 1997 from a Mexico/ Cali side journey in my sweet new(ish) Saab 900 with a bumping new stereo Bela blew out my speakers. It was a hecka nice day for a drive and I'd been skirting the 1 up along the coast hitting Half Moon Bay then heading east and at some point on a gorgeous winding road in the redwoods with sunlight shards poking through the misty musty forest I cranked Bela Fleck's Drive album so loud that I blew both of my brand new speakers. And it was worth it. I can still remember that drive if I close my eyes long enough.
Speaking of banjo bosses, yesterday Charlie Rose cranked up the coffee roaster in our horse trailer with the neighborhood kids all jammed in the trailer and made some wonderful coffee. We had a Guatemala/Congo blend that was really clean and sweet and caramelly and biscuity with the perfect medium body. We are selling these beans at the Lyons shop as roasting time allows. Charlie rigged up the solar panels and also the golf cart back up power last week. It's a really fun project that the whole neighborhood gets to watch. Charlie will be posting up a couple times a week roasting in the parking lot. Stop by and learn about EV's, solar power, coffee and just about anything else that you want from old Charlie Sprose. We may haul this rig down to Telluride too, and when Charlie 'aint busy crushing it on banjo with Elephant Revival (whatttttt!!!!! so excited) maybe he'll serve you a cup o Joe. Here at Leg'O Coffee Company we get 'em hooked early. Baby Jane 'aint even 2 and she's chewing on coffee beans.
Stay tuned for our Easter menu release and pre order info this week as well as an exciting musical performance announcement. Spring Wheat planting will be happening this week. If you have a favorite variety that you'd like us to plant, let me know. I'm loving the India Jammu and Tibetan Hull-less barley, so those will be going in for sure. Also working on procuring some blue and purple wheat from Dr. Jones at WSU to grow out. His Salish Blue has a deep blue tinge and is a perennial wheat.
Here's some music from the new Bela album. It is stunning and Bela just keeps stretching the boundaries of acoustic music with his friends. I want to try to blow the speakers out of my pick up truck later today after my 6th cup of coffee.
