Bakesale For Racial Justice is ON!
Tomorrow starts our quarterly Colorado Grain Chain Bakesale For Racial Justice. Was there ever a more perfect time to celebrate diversity and promote inclusion than with the inauguration of the first woman of color gaining the Vice Presidency of America? Kamala Harris, we are here to support and can not wait to see what you accomplish in these next 4 years.
Proceeds from the bakesale go to The First Nations Development Institute (National but based in Longmont, CO): https://www.firstnations.org/our-programs/nourishing-native-foods-health/ AND The 4 Corners Collaborative: https://www.facebook.com/the4CC/
Since we are focusing on indigenous corn this year on the Colorado Grain Chain, we thought it would be appropriate to bust out a corn bread using the amazing corn that we are stocking at our mill in Boulder and Moxie Feed & Seed. This blue corn comes from Albuquerque. It has been nixtamalized and dried in whole kernel form, and then we grind it fresh.
Please help me welcome the new Stella Blue Corn Bread. The buttery flavor and deep blue color are big and bold. Come down this weekend and try one out. 100% of the proceeds from this new item this weekend will go towards this fundraiser.
I snapped a pic of a slice of Stella Blue with an ear of Glass Gem corn that was gifted to me last year on a Taos trip from Ron Boyd. Ron sells these corn seeds to Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. If you have never checked out their catalogue, you should.
By the way, I've almost convinced Rich Pecoraro at Masa Seed Foundation to stock Moxie Feed & Seed with his seeds in bulk for all of you farmers and gardeners....stay tuned....

If you want to hop on this bakesale yourself, it's not too late. The general idea is that your bakery, restaurant, church group or kids even create a yummy treat to sell to your community. In doing so you will spreading the message of racial justice, inclusivity and love. Reenforcing that we are a country of kind hearted loving humans who value and respect each other regardless of color or creed, race or religion. Let your community know where you stand and start to open up the conversation. We are giving away a free 3 lb bag of flour to support your efforts, so just come in and ask for it and tell us your baking for racial justice with us this weekend! Bernie said he might do it once he puts the banjo down and takes his sweet wool mittens off. For more info go to www.coloradograinchain.com
Here's a gorgeous video of Flaco Jimenez from Tiny Desk Concerts.
Flaco is the boss. El Hefe. Isn't is wild that the German Polka wiggled it's way into Mexican music? If I could be anywhere but here right now, it would be on a jungle strip somewhere facing the beach in the Yucatan listening to this music being performed live.....or maybe even in Austin at Fonda San Miguel with friends drinking margaritas in the moist aromatic Texas night...
