Bela Banjo Boss
Can we take a moment to give it up for Bela Fleck for winning another Grammy last night? We had the honor of serving Bela coffee this summer (he is an espresso geek) and catering some of the rehearsals for this new band. Scotty our manager at the Lyons shop managed to take care of all of the special order requests from Bela and do the deliveries himself (while he sat around listening to them practice and totally geeking out himself).
Climate Chaos
I hope that everyone is safe and has somewhere to stay during this second fire of the year. Too close and too soon to say the least. Climate chaos. My guitars are still lined up in a row in my office next to a photo of my mother from the Marshal Fire from when I dug them out of nooks and crannies during the evacuation in December.
BakeSale for Fire Relief
We are excited to announce our first #GrainChain4Change Bake Sale of 2022. As many of you may remember we have run Bake Sales for Racial Justice seasonally over the past few years (stay tuned for this in July).
Today is a Beautiful Day.
Today is a beautiful day. Every day is a beautiful day. It is Spring. The birds have been singing more each day.
Whole Grain Goodness
I just got returned from a soul recharge week with so many friends old and new in Skagit Valley, Washington at the WSU Bread Lab, mastermind of Dr. Stephen Jones. It has made me re-think my whole focus on heirloom wheat quite frankly. To learn about Steve’s thoughtful breeding approach gives me assurance that he is making healthy wheats for the people.
Knife Sharpening TODAY
Swing by our Louisville shop today and bring your best knives to get sharpened. Our buddy Devin is bringing up his knife wagon to pistol whip your favorite little blades into shape. The timing is great for anyone who has purchased one of the Japanese knives we've been selling for the past few months. We are going to get Devin to come out to all stores on a regular basis. Just come down from around noon- 3 and drop your knives off, grab a coffee and get your knife returned to you after your cup o Joe.
Wonder Women
I am going to re-post my recent Instagram post from this week since I am still feeling irritated about the whole thing and this might help me get over it, so thanks for listening.
Mardi Gras & COCKTAILS!!!
Boy do I wish I was in New Orleans right now. Chaya down at Bywater Bakery in NOLA just finished making 18,000 King Cakes out of a bakery just about the size of Moxie. One time on St Joseph's Day Chaya led us around the back alleys of New Orleans following lines of dancing and singing Indians for one of the most magical night of my life. It became apparent to me during that trip that the very soul of the most original American art form of jazz and blues percolated from the swamps and flat lands around that fine city. We stopped in for turkey necks at Kermit's Treme Mother In Law Lounge and then hit the Lamp Lighter Lounge for Treme Brass Band while drinking whisky from the bottle and eating sweet andouille. Just another night in NOLA I think.
Grateful
Yesterday we held the most Woodstock of family fire relief events ever. BJ from Conscious Alliance called down on Tuesday with concerns about where he'd park their enormous truck filled with 6 pallets of brand new stuff to give away to folks in need. Said he'd been working with Vanessa on logistics. I said who the hell is that? He said I thought she was with you? LOL. I said let's park that truck on Main Street then.
Tons of Free Stuff Tomorrow!
Folks, tomorrow we are hosting another Marshall Fire event, and this is a whopper. Conscious Alliance is bring a TRUCKLOAD of stuff to give away to those affected by the fire. We are excited to be partnering with and having more items available ✨FOR FREE✨ from @Patagonia, @ISupportTheGirls, @Conscious Alliance, @AllPetVoices and @doTERRAHealingHands.
Marshal Fire Family Relief Event and Pizza Party SUNDAY
It is with great excitement that I announce our second Marshall Fire Family Relief Event NUMBER 2 this Sunday. We are teaming up with Patagonia Boulder who has collected gently used clothing from across their company for donation for this event as well as Love For Lily, our beloved local NICU team that supports families journey from the NICU back to the home.
Moxie Update ∆2∆22∆22∆
If you believe like I believe that today represents a folding over of the cosmos (not the pizza place with spice ranch) with a small opening into the multiverse on this ∆2∆22∆22∆, then I look forward to meeting you on the other side. We can say things like "did you see what I just thought" and the whatnot and float around. The portal is ripe at 2° F for transfer with a return transfer at 22°F.
Today is a great day folks.
In Boulder County we bid farewell to the dreaded mask. These masks that choke us. These masks that hide our smiles. These masks that made us discover how to smile with our eyes. It's taken me two years to figure out how to smile with my eyes. These masks that somehow smell like pepperoni pizza, spicy ranch and American Spirits after Jamestown pizza parties.
From Oakland to Sac-town, the Bay Area and back down
So much to say...so much to say...I've been too busy doing stuff to stop long enough to blabber at your inbox. You are welcome :)
The Gods are all here. Because the Gods are in us.
I got an early text yesterday from Jesse asking if I could meet him early because he woke up early and hit the road before sun up. Jesse helps our farmer friend Sarah Jones up in the San Luis Valley and he was coming down the hill to pick up some grain to deliver to Barton Springs Mill down in Texas. Luckily I had been up for hours already for no good reason, so I said "let's do this...I'll hop on the forklift and get you loaded early".
Wait what, wheat?
It may seem like winter only just pulled up, if not a little late to the party, but we are deep in the throes of spring wheat planting planning. Dr Stephen Jones and his amazing team at the Bread Lab over at WSU are going to share some of their regionally adapted seed so that we can give some new wheat varieties a try. I have been so focused on old wheat that I have never even given new wheat much attention.
Covid Vaccine Update
We are still reeling from our lost dream of the farm in Lafayette....thank you for all of your support. There will be another farm, maybe right here in Louisville. If you have ideas, please shoot them over.
What The???
The other day I got a text from Claudia at Pastaficio with something about Food & Wine magazine and bread and Colorado in the note. After some googling I discovered that Moxie and our soul sister bakery Reunion in Denver were listed as the "Best Bread in The State".
The Return of Magic
It can be elusive, sometimes it is hard to notice when magic starts to bubble up through the ground beneath our feet, but yesterday I felt it and looked around and saw other people slipping into it too.
Pizza & Sonny Rollins Bridge
Come down Sunday to Moxie Louisville for a mid day pizza party. The weather is supposed to cooperate and is showing a high of 48*F. All proceeds go to victims of the fire. We'll be playing music too, so bring and instrument or borrow ours. Noon- 3 pm or whenever we stop playing music...
